Justin Kim - The Hounds of Tindalos - Frank Belknap Long
Greetings! We hope you all had a wonderful and restful holiday break. Now that the new term has started, we are ready to get to work. Concept 2 is a term-long group project class and there is a lot to do so we are going to ask you all to prepare a few things for us to get the ball rolling. Your instructors will be using the first class to introduce and get to know each of you, create groups based on specific criteria, and assign stories for each group to develop. On Wednesday evening (January 20), we expect you to have the following at the start of class (6:00 pm) and ready to submit.
-2 to 3 images of what you believe is your strongest and most representative work (11 x 17; 100 DPI)
-Personal Detail Sheet (11 x 17) stating your Term, Favorite Genre, Area of Strength and Interest, Property that represents you best. Find the Personal detail sheet template in the resource links to the right.
Additionally, be prepared to do some artwork during our first day of class. We will be asking you to complete 2 art tests in class to help us group each of you. Make sure your photoshop, procreate, or whatever you use to make images digitally is in working order.
Sometime this week you will get an email to join something called Bluescape. Please accept that invite and get registered as we will be using this platform for classroom crit. If you haven’t used it before, it has a bit of promise that I’m hoping translates well for our needs.
We will be going over administrative logistics in class but feel free to take a look at the rest of the resources on the right (e.g. syllabus, goals, grading rubric, accountability worksheet). Also, we’ve created a contact sheet with your default ArtCenter email. We will be corresponding with you through that email so make sure you check on it often. Join the discord channel as we will be using it to keep up communication throughout the term.
We will be assigning stories to each group before the end of class, week 1. While we reserve the right to assign stories as we see fit, we do take preference into consideration. For you to have a preference you have to know the stories. The following are the stories we will be developing this term (and we may have a few more on week 1), so take this week to read the stories and start thinking about which ones you’d like to work on.
Ozioma the Wicked - Nnedi Okorafor
The Night School - Thomas Ligotti
The Shadow, The Darkness - Thomas Ligotti
The Mermaid, the Manticore, and Me - Megan Kurashige
The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains - Neil Gaiman
The Landlady - Roald Dahl
Lamb to the Slaughter - Roald Dahl
Once you’ve had a chance to read or listen to the stories, please answer this poll to help us determine groups. Note that your instructors have the final say in what group and story you will be working on but we do take preference into consideration.
